Seminar

Enhancing Learning Outcomes and Motivation by application of Graphic Novels in the classroom

Date: 17 August 2014

Time: 2:30 – 3:30 pm

Venue: D1-LP-08

Speaker: Dr. Simpson Wong

Language: English

Abstract:

As textual format is dominant in course materials, the success of learning is largely determined by students’ language and reading proficiency (Thomas & Mckay, 2010). When taking EMI courses, language difficulties could pose great challenges in learning for students with weak English background.

To promote effective learning and minimize the confounding effect of language proficiency on learning, the application of graphic novel (also known as comics) in developing course materials is proposed. In this seminar, Dr. Simpson Wong will talk about his research on application of graphic novel in teaching supported by Teaching Development Grants (Reference code: T0122). He will share with us experience of creating a set of course materials in the comics form, findings of a randomized-controlled-trial experiment that examined the effect of comics on learning outcomes and motivation, as well as interviews with teaching staff and students on the use of graphic novels in the classroom.

Exhibition

When Psychology meets comics: comic-style teaching materials on Psychology

Date: 18-19 September 2014

Time: 11:00am – 4:30 pm

Venue: C-LP-02

Interesting, flexible and reader-friendly, Comics as a popular art form has been widely embraced. The multi-modal and the highly effective communicative nature of comics also make it an ideal medium of teaching and learning. However, while the use of comic features is prevalent in children’s books, the application of this presentation format in educational materials for more advanced learners is very limited. This exhibition features examples of comic-style course materials on Psychology, which are created by student comic artists under a research project supervised by Dr. Simpson Wong and supported by Teaching Development Grants (project code:T0122). You will be led through the interesting journey of integrating teaching and the exciting world of comics.
